Highland Park And Its Music Is Cool
Well Highland Park had had a number of new bistros and old restaurants now bringing in the aspect of music to the program. The amount of residents in the art-entertainment-film industry just continues to grow and with it a new culture. A time of music in many forms is becoming more and more popular.
On York Blvd near Ave 51 we have Italiano’s with jazz now taking place on Friday’s from 7 to 9. The parking is easier than Le Cave (La Cuevita) and the pizza is quite popular in the neighborhood with the locals. The other good point is that there is no cover charge so one can have some Italian goodies and enjoy free jazz to accompany the meal. It is great for the students of nearby Occidental College to spend some relaxing time.
On Figueroa is Le Cave or La Cuevita as it’s now called has music from Jazz to include interesting happy hours and is right across from the fire station near Ave 59. The music venue changes often and it remains one of the more popular spots in Highland Park music. Each week, The Northeast Groove Ensemble, started by local musicians Robert Nava and Christian Castillo, plays everything from Coltrane to Mingus and even many funky originals. The combo, which also features a guitar and alto saxophone, begin their set at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30, while patrons enjoy special cocktails and a happy hour that lasts rather deep into the jazzy night.
The Highland Theatre on Figueroa and Ave 56 also does a short film festival certain times of the year. NELA Art brings this on and information can be found on Facebook, www.facebook.com/NelaArtShortFilmSeries. A little different from the music but a great change of pace. Admission is $10 For pre-sale tickets, and one can check at The Glass Studio at 5052 York Blvd for more specific details on the next showing.
